Founded in 1947
Anuradhapura Central College was established on 21 July 1947 as part of C. W. W. Kannangara’s free education reforms, becoming one of the first Central Colleges in Sri Lanka.
Fact (No. 02)
Located in the Heart of Rajarata
Situated in central Anuradhapura on a 15-acre campus, the school was relocated to its current location in 1952, thanks to land allocated by S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike.

National School Status
The school was declared a National School on 25 May 1993 and is administered under the North Central Province Education Department.

Diverse Academic Streams
Offering classes from Grades 6 to 13, the college supports science, mathematics, commerce, arts, aesthetics, and agriculture, with modern digital learning initiatives.

Four House System
Students are grouped into four houses—Ananda, Mahinda, Rahula, and Seewali—named after arahant theros. Annual inter-house games foster school spirit.

Modern Facilities
The college includes science labs, computer centers, a library, and a multipurpose auditorium. A swimming pool was added in 2024, opened by President Ranil Wickremesinghe

Excellence in Sports
With titles in cricket, volleyball, and athletics, the school holds six all-island cricket championships and frequently wins provincial-level competitions.

Dedicated Sports School
A special sports academy nurtures rural talent, offering boarding and training to athletes from across the district. In 2023, the school won the North-Central Provincial Games.

The school has produced professionals in law, medicine, arts, and public service—including Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, Sri Lanka’s first female Chief Justice.

School Anthem & Motto
The school anthem, “Namadimu baethi gee kusum puda”, is sung at assemblies. The motto “අසමු, දරමු, හැසිරෙමු” means “Harken, Memorise, Act.”
